Late last year Brian Honigman put together a lovely list of 100 social media stats.
There are so many extremely interesting facts, figures and insights. What do you make of them?
- WOMEN ARE PISSED OFF: “85 percent of women are annoyed by their friends on Facebook.” I wonder what they’re annoyed about. Jealous? Judging? Reacting to provocative commentary? Well Facebook is a social network and unfortunately you have to put up with the good and the bad. If you look at it from a brand marketing point of view, remember that it is like talking to your best friend. Keep it real. Keep it interesting and keep it positive to inspire people and not annoy them with endless push-posts about your products.
- SEX, SEX, YES PLEASE: “Links about sex are shared 90 percent more than any other link.” Wow that’s a big one. Well it’s pretty obvious. Sex has always ‘sold’. However remember there’s a fine line between being down right dirty versus sexually intriguing.
- DON’T TREAT THEM LIKE TWITS: “11 accounts are created every second on Twitter.” A great reminder that there are a lot of newbies following you and your marketing accounts. Remember to treat them like Virgin Consumers. Demystify your activity and welcome them with simplified messaging.
- PICTURE YOURSELF IN LOVE: “The top 5 of the top 100 hash tags on Instagram are #love, #instagood, #me, #tbt and #cute.” So it makes sense to think of Instagram as a place of serendipity. A little bit of love in pictures where you can create huge emotional bonds with your audience. However like being in love, it takes a lot of ongoing work and you can fall off the rails easily. Be careful to nurture your strategy and engagement. How are you using Instagram for marketing your business?
- PEOPLE EATING IT UP IN PINTEREST: “57 percent of Pinterest users interact with food-related content, the #1 category of content.” So if you’re marketing any products related, or even loosely related to food, then you should be integrating Pinterest into your marketing mix. How are you making your customers salivate?
- QUALITY CONNECTIONS: “The automotive industry has 2.7MM circlers on Google+, compared to 1.9MM for electronics, and 1.3MM for luxury goods.” It feels like G+ is deeper with detail and the finer things in life. So if you’re targeting an affluent and well educated AB audience, then G+ is the place for your marketing.
